dura & temporalis
This project started as an exploration of the very permanent and the very impermanent. The challenge was to create a teahouse that would marry the two in a functional form. The final product is a central core of structural concrete – the very permanent, with a wrapping of canvas – the very impermanent. As the teahouse ages and weathers, the canvas, which completes the building gets worn down. After a couple years, the stained and weathered canvas is burned away in a giant cleansing fire. Then the building is re-wrapped and the cycle begins anew.
